Kolding – it cannot disappoint you

Kolding is a beautiful Danish town with a seaport in the Kolding fjord. Its history is rich, which takes us back 800 years ago. The city has a good geographical location, which is a prerequisite for easy access to any part of Denmark. It is a transport and industrial center with many companies, operating mainly in the field of shipbuilding. Billund Airport is also close to the city and Legoland is just a half-hour drive away. In 2009, Kolding announced an ambitious project to build a Nordic Synergy Park (Synergiparken), similar to the Sophia Antipolis Park in France.

Although Denmark is not known for its mountainous terrain, Kolding is surrounded by hills. It has a direct access to the sea and in summer you can easily sunbathe. The seaside is covered with fine sand, and if you turn your back to the sea, in front of you will open a wide green field. Next to it you will see the beginning of a forest. If you get tired of the sun you can walk in the never-ending cool forest on the other side of the town… A great place for walking or cycling, the town is very compact, you can reach any point on foot. The three universities in the city are built next to each other and the town’s river runs around them.

The city is proud of its Koldinghus Castle, which today is a museum and a venue for cultural events and exhibitions. In the distant past, the town was built by the ruler Waldemar. Later, in the battle between the brothers Eric Plowpening and King Abel, it was set on fire. After the peace treaty between them, Koldinghus Castle was built – you can see on display a lot of valuable finds from the Middle Ages. Next to the castle there is a magnificent lake, where constantly gather Danish and international students. There are many free barbecue grills around it, as well as many other places for fun games, such as chess, miniture golf and the other. In the lake you can ride, completely free, water bike or boat, and in winter, it is used as an ice rink.

The center consists of several small streets where you can find grocery stores, clothing stores, several bars, pizzerias, restaurants and other. If you want to go shopping, you can visit the mall, but it is a little further from the city center (25-30 minutes by bike). Of course, you can use public transport, which is punctual to the last minute. Don’t be surprised if you see wild bunnies jumping around in the city. The place is so quiet and clean that the animals are not afraid to visit the us.

If you want to move to another, more recent time, in the Traphold Art Museum you can observe modern art – paintings, designer models and furniture. There is a huge collection of chairs, so if you get tired of walking around Kolding, you can rest there. It is located in a beautiful park overlooking the water of Kolding Fjord. The Museum for Sisters is also very popular, as it is a beautiful building that takes you directly to the forest. Kolding will appeal to everyone. It offers everything you can find in the big city, without having to face stress, hectic daily life, its remoteness from nature and let’s not forget the more approachable contact with the locals. Last but not least – the reasonable lower prices, suitable for many students in the city.

As Kolding belongs to the group of smaller cities, you would find accommodation in it easier than in Aalborg, Aarhus or Copenhagen. To get student accommodation, you will have to slowly go up waiting lists in the websites that offer such student accommodation. This usually takes a minimum of 2 to 4 months and depends a lot on the type of accommodation you would like to rent. You may have guessed that the cheaper the accommodation, the harder it is to qualify for it, as these are usually the most desired ones. If you do not have enough time to wait for the desired accommodation, you will have to pay a certain amount (about 50-100 EURO) to one of the agencies in the city that rent apartments. However, keep in mind that these apartments are usually rented to working people, not students. Therefore, be prepared to pay a higher price for the apartment than for the student dormitory.
