Aalborg – Paris of the North

Aalborg, Jomfru Ane Gade, The Bull, F.R.I.E.N.D.S and you name it…  

Paris of the North. This is the fourth largest city in Denmark – Aalborg, because it also has its own tower – Aalborgtårnet. The picturesque atmosphere of the city is emphasized by the Limfjorden canal, which divides it into two main parts – Aalborg and Nørresundby.

Aalborg is a city where the strong contrasts will make your student life an interesting experience. The city will attract your attention with its beautiful historic buildings, which foundations date back to the 17th century. On the other hand, it is a dynamic, modern and international city. If you have decided to study here, a quite unique atmosphere will welcome you. The city also has an international airport, which will facilitate your travel to and from home, but also to other cities around Europe and the rest of the world.

Aalborg is one of the main student cities in Denmark, in the center of which you can find the “Studenterhuset” ( the Student House). There are organized regularly various events and concerts. It is one of the main places where you can meet with friends as well as other foreign students and Danes studying at the universities in Aalborg.

There are 3 emblematic places for the city in the heart of the city. The first one is the statue of the Bull, which is a symbol of the city. On its left side you will find the well-known coffee F.R.I.E.N.D.S, where you must try the Danish specialty of the northerners – a sandwich with steak and brown sauce (bøf sandwich med brun sovs). On the right side of the Bull begins one of the pedestrian streets in the city, which leads to the well-known “Party Street” throughout Denmark – Jomfru Anne Gade or as the locals call it, just “The Street” – “Gaden”.

Another important attraction for the city is the Carnival, which is held annually on the last Friday and Saturday in May. Aalborg Karneval is the largest in northern Europe and every year attracts over 100,000 visitors from around the world. It is difficult or even impossible to describe in words this experience – there is not another of its kind. Don’t make the mistake of taking a shift at work that Saturday! You will certainly regret it, and the money you will receive will not be worth it. We are ready to bet that this will become your favorite day in the city, as it is for the vast majority of the city’s residents.

There are very few future students, who are aware that finding a room in Aalborg is not very easy – especially at the end of the summer. If you have not thought about it in advance, and therefore you have not submitted documents for a student accommodaiton, it is quite possible to spend a month in hostels (Dan Hostel) until you find a permanent accommodation. Unfortunately, the prices in Denmark are not low. Be prepared to pay around  EURO  per night for a shared bungalow with 11 other people.
