Sønderborg (Sunebo) is a city in southern Denmark. It is the main city and the administrative place of the municipality of Sønderborg. Sønderborg Castle is also located within the boundaries of town. It is located in the center and has a magnificent museum focusing on the history and culture of the area. The museum is open all year round. Sønderborg is located on both sides of the island of Als. The narrow strait between the two sides is called Alssund. Two road bridges connect the city across the strait. Today, Sønderborg is characterized by a dynamic business environment in the fields of high technology, mechanical engineering, food, textile and has several educational institutions and colleges. There is also an attractive windmill in the town, which you must visit once you settle down.
The city has access to both the sea and the forest, which offers different types of entertainment – there is something for everyone.
There are many opportunities to participate in sports, cultural and volunteer activities together with other young people in Sønderborg. By participating, you can develop your language skills and make new friends. You will find many sports halls – for taekwondo, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, a lot of outdoor and indoor football fields. The Grand Youth House is a great place if you want to meet other students. It is open from Wednesday to Friday from 14:00 to 18:00. Fun Bowling is one of the largest bowling alleys in southern Denmark. In addition to the bowling alley, there is a café-bar, too.
As a smaller city (only about 75,000 inhabitants), here you will make friends much faster. As the Danes themselves say, “You go out in the center and there’s no way you can’t see someone you know – you smile and wave at each other.”
As one of the smaller cities in Denmark, finding accommodation is much easier here. The Southern Danish University guarantees that each student will receive a student room in a dormitory, which should also bring you a great deal of peace and security.
However, you should keep in mind that there is another university in the city, which creates serious competition for the accommodation at the end of the summer. Your rent will also be significantly lower, as you will be able to rank for the best and cheapest rooms of them all.
