What is the program all about?

The Computer Science program in Denmark is 2.5 years and consists of 5 semesters. The students are between 25-35 in a class. Classes can be pure international or mixed with Danes. This is a plus, as Danes help a lot with the integration in the country – traditions, customs, and Danish is easier to learn along with them.

The exams are based on group projects, followed by a presentation on the work done. Professors choose software, which has to be made by the class. Everything should be documented in a report – how the work went, what programming language was used, graphics for the code architecture, business model, database, connections between different technologies, etc. The presentation is always based on the submitted project.

In the first and second semesters four subjects are studied: databases, system development engineering (programming), information technology outsourcing (IT business) and computer architecture and operating systems. The technologies that are studied are: Java, Javafx, Microsoft SQL. You should expect to make basic desktop programs with java, connected to the mssql database and manipulating the information in it after the first year.

Usually, during the third semester you will study: software development, computer network and distributed systems (how the internet works), software development methods. Technologies that are studied: C#, .NET Core/ASP .NET, sqlite. Expect to make desktop programs with C# after the 3rd semester. You will concentrate on how to work with a local server or send information to another, remote server.

Fourth semester – things get really interesting here! Learning: Navision or Cisco. The advantage of Cisco is that at the end of the course, you receive a certificate for free, which would otherwise cost a bag of money. You will also deal with internet of things, xamarin (mobile android/iOS programming), Raspberry Pi, fullstack web programming & software testing, software design, unity game programming. The technologies you will study are: terminal, web programming (backend & frontend) with the help of node.js and python flask, python, javascript, angular2 with typescript, MongoDB, unity, postman, git, test driven development and much more. All these subjects are very interesting in their own right and you will learn the most important things about the software industry.

Personal opinion and practical experience

Overall, the program offers a very good education as there is a lot of practice and we work directly with the professors. This creates a friendly atmosphere and strong relationships between us all. My academy has many connections around the city and this helped us to find an internship and possibly a job right after graduation.

At the end of the 4th semester I was working on a big project in which we wrote software (website and mobile application) for the municipality. This in itself made the project more exciting and prompted us to take a more professional approach.

At the end of the 4th semester, expect to make websites, mobile applications and games, create small machines with the help of Raspberry Pi, gain deep understanding and knowledge of how the Internet and the technology work.

The last fifth semester is an internship at a company. It is about 10 weeks long or more. I had the opportunity to work for the large Danish company Danfoss Nordborg, but I chose to take on another challenge and I am currently a major driver at a Startup called Smart Academy.
