The official language in the Kingdom of Denmark is Danish. Yes, there is almost no person in the country who does not speak English fluently. In many places on the Internet you will find articles where you will read that English is the second official language in Denmark.

Most probably a lot of people in your country also speak English. However, would you be able to solve your problems if you do not speak your local language? You may encounter serious difficulties until you resolve it in the institutions. The same goes for Denmark. When everything is fine, your English will do a great job for you and not knowing any Danish will not be a problem at all. However, remember that all contracts or official documents that you will have to sign will be in Danish. When you cannot read what is written and don’t know what exactly you’re signing, you’ll be an easy prey for anyone who’s decided to deceit you…

Will you sign documents in Danish without knowing what is written there?!?!?

Even before you leave for Denmark, you will have to sign your accommodation contract (if, of course, you have submitted documents for accommodation on time). Usually the amount you will have to pay when moving in to your room/apartment varies between 1000-2000 EURO. We are not sure about you, but we would definitely like to know what clauses of the contract we agree to comply with, whom we pay this amount to and what exactly do we need to comply with to get the money back when we move out of the apartment. Unfortunately, almost all newcomers ignore this need to be familiar with the Danish language. A fairly large percentage (80%) of them do not get their deposit money back. Furthermore, you might be asked to pay more money on the top of your deposit for damages in the apartment because you have not complied with points X and Y in your contract. Always question the deals you make!

In addition to your accommodation contract, in Denmark you will have to sign other documents in Danish – contracts for electricity, water, internet, telephone, bicycle, scooter, etc.

Unfortunately, although Denmark is a country where the mentality of the people is on a different level and the Danes want and trust each other, they are also people. This means that it is inevitable and you will encounter scammers sooner or later. The difference in Denmark comes from the high living standard. Therefore, be prepared to be scammed not with 10 EURO, but 100 or 1000 EURO (or even more). We are not saying to be constantly suspicious, but just be careful – especially when purchasing second hand goods from a private person on the Internet! We strongly advise you to talk to friends or people who speak Danish and have been living in Denmark for a while. These people will help you with their life experience.
