Bachelor in Mechatronics Engineering (BSc and BEng)
What is the program about?
From the very beginning of your education in mechatronics you will engage in creating user-friendly intelligent products that combine mechanics, electronics and embedded systems. For example, this could be the hand of a robot picking a tomato or an artificial leg that can be used by athletes. Also, be prepared to compile and program drones, power steering, smart TVs, electric desks, espresso machines… You will become a practical designer of products that combine electronics, mechanics and
intelligent software that allows you to develop and connect these system areas in an optimal way.
The program provides extensive technical knowledge through basic courses in mechanics, electronics, software programming, power electronics, thermodynamics, mechanical engineering, marketing, design, manufacturing and more… You will have the opportunity to specialize by choosing some of your subjects. You will also have an internship in a Danish or foreign company, as well as a diploma project on what interests you the most. As part of the learning process you will have the opportunity to work with students from different programs to achieve the best results with the final product.
Students from the 2 types of programs (BEng and BSc) are part of one class and have their lectures and exercises together until the 4th semester. For his fifth semester, everyone chooses whether to do an exchange at another university (in Denmark or in another country) or to work in the “Expert Team” on the Sønderborg campus with other students.
The sixth semester is the key moment when everyone goes on their own way. BEng students have compulsory internships, while BSc students have electives and write their dissertations. BEng students write their bachelor’s thesis in the 7th semester and have no electives while doing so. (BSc no 7th semester)
You should know that BSc students complete a bachelor’s degree, BUT DO NOT acquire the title of engineer. Many of them continue with a masters degree to obtain it. However, the BEng student acquires the title after completing his bachelors degree!
Historically, the bachelors degree student (BSc) goes directly to a masters degree and then to the job market, while BEng student is usually not looking forward to continue studying, but focuses on starting their professional career right away. If in the process of your education you change your desire, it is quite possible to change your program in the first year of study.
What are the conditions for admission and what documents do you need to submit?
In order for your documents to be reviewed, you must have:
English language – level B.
Mathematics – level A.
Physics – level B.
1. Motivation letter.
2. Diploma for completed secondary education or academic transcript (for the last 3 years with grades and number of hours).
3. Verification form.
4. Copy of ID card or passport.
5. Certificate in English.
What can you continue to study or work on?
The Bachelor of Mechatronics is professionally oriented, which means that in 3 years you will be ready to start working as a highly qualified specialist. If you want, you can continue your studies and get a masters degree in Mechatronics or Electronics.
The job opportunities that will open up to you are in a fairly wide range – companies involved in the development, maintenance and sales of mechatronics. Once gained a lot of valuable knowledge and skills in the field of mechanics, electronics and embedded systems, do not think that they will leave you on the labor market for a long time without serious offers! Some of the possible positions are:
Development Engineer, Technical Project Manager, Customer Service / Consulting, Project Sales, Research and Teaching.

Structure of the program
Each semester is based on a main topic, which will be a focal point for the theory of the semester and the work on a large (semester) project. From the beginning, you form your own group of several people to work with throughout the semester. Together you will try to find the best solutions to the problems asked by the company (Danish or foreign) with which you will work every day.
You start with A and B – what is mechatronics and what is needed to develop mechatronics products. You will design a small mechatronic product that will guide you through the entire development process with your group.
In the second semester you will learn about system components and their interactions. You will learn to design electronic and mechanical elements and to manufacture and incorporate them into mechatronic products. As part of the semester project, you will develop a mechatronic product that will be able to move.
During the third semester you will work with analog electronics, drives and sensors, as well as dynamic systems. The semester project will focus on the development of a complete mechatronic system, including the use of drives and sensors, electronics design, as well as the specification and production of mechatronics.
In the fourth semester you will gain basic knowledge about regulatory systems and how they are integrated into a product. Here you will choose your profile – mechanics, electronics, embedded systems or multidisciplinary profile, where you choose between items from other profiles. Additionally, here you will focus on control equipment and computer engineering.
In the fifth semester you will develop multidisciplinary skills, emphasizing on entrepreneurship and innovation – you will participate in the so-called “Experts in Teams”. You will start your own virtual company and go through all phases of development with it – from the idea generation to creating a fully functional prototype – taking into account the economy, external suppliers, etc. Alternatively, you can also choose to study at another university in Denmark or another country for this semester.
The sixth semester is dedicated to a six-month engineering internship in a Danish or foreign company. During the last seventh semester you are fully occupied with your diploma work, which is often related to the company and the internship you did in the previous one.
